Chris Taylor situation with the Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers have released veteran utility player Chris Taylor after eight seasons with the team. The move was made to activate fellow utility player Tommy Edman from the injured list.

Taylor, who joined the Dodgers in 2016, had seen his playing time diminish significantly this season, appearing in just 35 games with only 28 plate appearances. Despite being a versatile and key contributor to successful Dodgers teams from 2017 to 2023, his offensive production declined, and he struggled to find a consistent role on the current star-studded roster.

The decision to release Taylor means the Dodgers will pay out the remaining year of his $60 million contract, allowing him to become a free agent. This move comes shortly after the release of longtime backup catcher Austin Barnes, signaling a shift as the team makes room for newer players like Tommy Edman and prospect Dalton Rushing. The release of Taylor also likely indicates that rookie second baseman Hyeseong Kim will remain with the major league team.

Taylor was a fan favorite known for his versatility and clutch postseason performances, including being co-MVP of the 2017 NLCS and hitting key home runs in the 2021 playoffs. However, his recent struggles ultimately led to the Dodgers parting ways with the longtime player.
